Paintings and reflections

Asha

A young girl stands at the threshold between childhood and the person she will become.

Narrative

Inspired by the artist's daughter at age ten, the painting reflects both intimacy and mystery. As a mother, I knew her habits, protected her future, celebrated her achievements, and shared her daily life. Yet there was always a part of her that remained beyond my reach, a private world revealed only in fragments, partial stories, and fleeting glimpses.

The figure is rendered with clarity while the surrounding forms dissolve into layers of texture, color, and abstraction. These shifting elements suggest the complexity of identity and the hidden experiences, thoughts, and emotions that often remain unseen, even within the closest relationships.

Created from a mother's perspective, the work explores the tension between knowing and not knowing. It reflects the experience of loving someone deeply while recognizing that their inner life ultimately belongs to them alone.

The figure's gaze extends beyond the frame, directed toward a future not yet visible. The painting captures a moment suspended between connection and independence, closeness and separation, certainty and uncertainty.

Looking back years later, the work has acquired new meaning. What once appeared to be a portrait of a child now feels like a reflection on motherhood itself, the hopes we carry for our children, the sacrifices we make on their behalf, and the realization that their journeys may ultimately lead beyond our understanding.

Rather than documenting a single moment, the painting serves as a meditation on love, distance, and the enduring mystery of another human being.
